Creating music that sounds like 'Dr. Dre produced the Star Wars Canteena Band' to fully orchestrated underscore that would fit in a 'David Lynch' movie, genre hoping composer Don Bodin, creates music for film, media and albums that contain his subtle dark and quirky fingerprints in melody as well as in space between the notes.
Four years ago Don started Endocrine Music - a music for media company and has since contributed music to several independent feature films (including Fuego starring David Carradine), full length documentaries (including National Geographic's Ship Sinkers), for advertising (Toyota, Grey's Anatomy Scrubs and Maybelline Cosmetics) as well as independently releasing 4 albums.
After a studying classical / jazz guitar and 20th century music composition, Don spent the end of the 90's in Chicago, honing his production skills with indie artists (including Kill Hannah & Plastic Princess) while fronting the elctro rock band File Underwater. File Underwater disband in 2000 shortly after their 3rd independently released album (Fluid) made it to 27 on Amazon.com 'Emerging Artists' sales charts.
Don relocated to Los Angeles in 2002, brushed up on film scoring at UCLA and is currently writing and producing score as well as pop music collaborations with such artists as Alain Whyte (Morissy), Gerard Marino (God of War), Lance Hayes (Forza Motorsport 3), Chris Schleyer's 'Affected' project (Prick, Kidney Thieves, Stabbing Westward).
Composer; Instrumentalist; Producer; Creative Director, Movie Theater Janitor . . A partial list of the 52 “jobs” that have lead Don Bodin to composing for film, television and other media for living.
While studying music composition at Millikin University, Bodin began his career working on jazz albums with musicians including Dave Hoffman (Ray Charles) and Billy Stritch (Liza Minelli). Those projects led to the start up of Bodin’s first record label, Baby Factory. While running Baby Factory, Bodin produced several projects including four albums for alternative rock artists Kill Hannah as well as several independent Chicago bands.
In 2000 Bodin’s electronic rock band, File Underwater, took the #27 position on Amazon.com’s Emerging Artists sales charts. After File Underwater disbanded in 2001, Bodin relocated to the West Coast and spent a year as a monitor engineer for live shows for such acts as: Modest Mouse, Slater-Kinney, Pink Martini, Frank Black and David Lingquist of the Pixies, Puff Daddy, Elliot Smith, The Reverend Horton Heat, Busta Rymes, Concrete Blond and in an impromptu performance sang on stage with Guided by Voices.
2004 found Bodin in Los Angeles with a new focus on music for film. He began to studying film scoring at UCLA where he met friend and mentor Charles Bernstien, of Nightmare on Elm Street fame. After completing only 2 film scoring classes, Bodin was encouraged by Bernstein to take his talent and business skills and start his own production company to provide music for film, television and new media.
In the three years since focusing on score for media, Bodin has contributed music to several independent feature films including Fuego (starring David Carradine). He also had original music placed in promotional spots for Toyota Motors, Grey’s Anatomy Scrubs, Maybelline Cosmetics and National Geographic.
Bodin has released 4 albums in the past 3 years including Greed, Lust And Cloning which received great reviews and has been licensed for use in television, film and commercials. His album Silenitum Est Alurum has been featured in commercial spots as well as comisssioned for Marching and Concert Bands arrangments.
Bodin’s current release (The Radioactive Werewolf and other Tales from the Southwest) takes a dash of classic horror film soundtracks, a generous helping of Morricone and Copeland, and a batch of roughly chopped Southern rock to serve up an inspiring mental road trip. For the album Bodin enlisted a number of talented musicians to perform his compositions including former guitar player for Morrissey, Alain Whyte, operatic soprano, Elif Savas (a staple on Bodin’s releases), and guitar / bass player Chris Schleyer (Affected, Kidney Thieves, Prick).
While juggling film scoring jobs and commercial commissions, Bodin has recently returned to his industrial rock past to work on a concept album with Dread and the Fugitive Mind. The project contains the “heaviest rock tracks I’ve ever written,” says Bodin. The album DATFM VS Mad Max (which is influenced by the Mad Max movie trilogy) is expected to be out in Febuary.
